Take action, save Earth!
ON APRIL 22, THURSDAY, THE whole world will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
Saving the Earth is undoubtedly a difficult task, but as its most intelligent inhabitants, we are the ones who should take responsibility for it, after all we are stewards of nature. The more we become apathetic about the negative effects of climate change plaguing our planet, the less liveable it becomes.
It’s not yet too late. Here are a few simple suggestions on how you could take action:
Stack your papers
Save trees by being wise when it comes to using paper. Remember those graded papers your professors returned to you last semester? Don’t throw them away! Next school year, use them when you need to make reviewers for exams or plans for projects. Also, try joining paper drives in your area and donate your stacks of old glossy magazines and newspapers. If you don’t have a campaign in your community, why not be the one to start it?
Skip the plastic
Plastic wastes have been very deadly to animals. Over a hundred miles off the California coast is an island made of seven billion pounds of plastic garbage coming from different places from all over the world. This island has killed thousands of animals which tried to eat small pieces of plastic, mistaking them for food. When packing your baon, use reusable lunch bags instead of disposable plastic bags. That way, you won’t be contributing to the billions of pounds of plastic wastes we already have. The same logic applies to choosing dining-in over taking-out your meals. Another way of reducing plastic wastes is skipping having your shopping items packed inside plastic bags, especially very small purchases like CDs or nail polishes. When shopping, use a canvass bag and simply ask for your receipts instead.
Plug wisely
Plugged electrical appliances continue to consume energy even with their switches turned off. If you’re done watching television or listening to the radio, take some extra time to unplug. Also, avoid consuming extra energy and damaging your batteries by plugging your gadgets only when they need to get recharged.
Green-up your school
Does your school implement garbage segregation? How about disallowing making use of disposable plastic containers in your cafeteria? Submit a proposal to your administrators to make your campus more environment friendly. Research on green projects already implemented in other institutions so you could make improvements on your ideas.
Keep yourself informed
Be updated when it comes to environmental issues that need to be addressed. CoolPeopleCare.org and GreenPeace.org are a couple of websites that can regularly update you about the latest environmental issues and inform you of activities you can take part in to make the world a better place, even in your own little ways.
